An area that is not well understood in distance running circles is the benefit of speed, strength and power training to aid in endurance performance.
Often runners hit a plateau where they can no longer increase their distance or speed. This is usually because they run too much. They have exhausted the muscles used for running and will not get any stronger. By lifting weights and strengthening the core it takes stress off the quad muscles and allow for a more balanced movement which helps to engage the entire body with marked improvement in distance and speed.
